MPIA Request Guide

BALT’s guide explains the process for submitting a request for public records under the Maryland Public Information Act (MPIA). The MPIA is an important legal mechanism that all community members can use to hold government agencies accountable. In the guide, we explain how community members can navigate the MPIA request process effectively and strategically.

This guide answers the following questions:

  1. What is the MPIA and what does it do?

  2. Why should the MPIA matter to me?

  3. What is the process for submitting a MPIA request?

  4. How do I know what kind of records to request?

  5. Who should I contact to request records?

  6. How should I follow up on my request?

Arrest Support Form

Baltimore organizers and activists protesting racial injustice and other forms of oppression should know that, in the event of their arrest, they will have legal support to defend them from the same abusive police power upholding oppression. Prior to direct actions, BALT’s Arrest Support Team distributes the hotline phone number to organizers and provides information about what to do if you are arrested. If arrested, protesters and activists can call the hotline to contact the Arrest Support Team for immediate practical support and assistance navigating the pretrial detention process.

BALT monitors our arrest support hotline during actions upon request only. If you are planning an action and want to request arrest support, please contact our Arrest Support team at baltprotestsupport@proton.me.

(As a courtesy to us, we ask that you submit requests 7-10 days in advance of planned action dates, or if you can’t, then as soon as possible. We do understand the need to mobilize rapidly in extenuating circumstances.)

Defund the Police - The Basics

Are you curious about what defunding the police actually means?

Check out these amazing projects from two Baltimore City youth who created these from scratch!

BALT’s partnership with Dent Education led us to collaborate with Anthony Ballard and Kima Johnson who designed our infographic and animated explainers!
