Support BALT’s Work

BALT supports community-led efforts to address racial injustices focused on inequities in the criminal justice system. We do this through community education and training, rapid response efforts, and direct legal services.

  •  We don’t employ the traditional legal services model.  Lawyers are often too specialized or too risk averse to meet the needs of the community. Organizations need access to legal information on their terms and in their communities. BALT is intentionally positioned to provide free legal assistance to community members in the ways and places they need.

  • We provide free warrant recalls and expungement services to community members to break down the barriers that the carceral system places on our loved ones. Our direct services are motivated by the explicit ask of the impacted community in Baltimore.

  • We provide legal education to expand the network of movement lawyers in Maryland. We believe that knowledge gained is knowledge we put back into our community.

  • We support activists in times of protest and political action through operation of our 24/7 Arrest Support Hotline, providing legal observing and facilitating know-your-rights trainings.

  • We have been operating a community bail fund since 2015, that when possible, supports people in Baltimore facing pretrial detention.  Our bail fund supports folks facing the daily injustices of pretrial detention, as well as in moments of protest.

  • BALT established our immigration bond fund in June 2026 in response to the massive increase in immigration detention and deportation. This fund is a resource for community members in Maryland to secure the release of their loved ones from ICE detention, and a contribution to the larger effort to defend immigrants, their loved ones, and our communities as a whole.
