BALT required $68,300 (or an average of $2,626 per person) to bail out those 26 people. BALT posted $11,200 or an average of $431 per person and was liable for an additional $57,100 that would be required if any of the individuals failed to appear for court.

Case Outcomes

Baltimore Action Legal Team (BALT) bailed out twenty-six individuals held on low level bails.

The 26 people who were freed experienced 1,189 days of freedom (average 44 days per person) as a result. Of the 26 cases that have been adjudicated, not a single person was sentenced to additional prison time. Seventeen (69%) of those cases were dismissed, put on the stet docket, or given a probation before judgement. Nine people (31%) pled or were found guilty for  charges that range from theft under $100, to public defecation, and drug possession. All of those 8 individuals were released at the time of trial with credit for time served, suspended sentences, or probation.

Of the 26 individuals who BALT posted their bail, only two (8%) failed to appear at their first court date. However, both individuals appeared for their second court date. All individuals we bailed out returned to court within 90 days of first appearance. All funds are scheduled to be returned and used to bail out additional individuals in 2018.
